Kinda wanting to get into some Gold, few questions...
 
Ok, so for some reason I woke up a few days ago wanting to get into some gold... I'm not 100% sure why... I just feel the need...

I'm not looking for a get rich quick plan, buy it today, sell it a week or a month from now for Huge profit, doesn't happen (legally)...
But I'd like to know that 5-10 hopefully 20+ years down the road if I need or want to sell, I'll be able to get what I paid for out of them and it would be real nice to actually take some profit...

Plus, I feel Gold is always good to own for several reasons...

So, I was thinking about starting with a 2010 10th oz Fractional G.A.E...

Then, Nothing huge like some of you guys, but durring this year picking up a few 10s that are raw and a few that are slabbed say MS-69... Maybe 5 of each this year...

In addion to that and being a collecter, I was also thinging about slowly over the years completing a set of one of each year.... in say MS-69..

Thoughts? Would I be better off looking at something else??? I can't afford to pull the trigger on whole ounce G.A.Es...

good strategy.

IMHO junior gold shares at this point are still a bargain, (not yet discovered by the masses)

I got started with 1/10s. Still dabble in them. Also take a look at the Mexican peso series which are very affordable and historic. Sovereigns are a great way to go as well.

You indicated you don't mind waiting for years, so, sorry I can't help pimping them yet again but with careful shopping, back-dated first spouses can be had for the same or lower premiums than an AGE. Do some research on their mintages, they have far more potential upside than common-dated Eagles with barely any more downside.

I like the little fractionals - but I wouldn't pay a premium for one graded 69 (for that matter, it'd have to be something other than 'just' bullion for me to pay a premium for a 70).

On the other hand, if you can pick up slabbed fracs for the same or less than raw coins, I see no harm in trying to hit more than one target with each stone thrown (or each dollar spent). Back when cashback was in excess of 20%, I did pick up a few 1/10 2007-Ws graded MS-69 - when all is said and done, they may be worth what bullion's worth, or they may be worth more. But, as I said, I paid less for them than I would have at the time for raw.

If you want to collect gold and silver Eagles do it as fun. They are bullion coins and (with the exception of a couple date/size gold eagles and one year silver Eagle) will never have much collectors value. All are uncirculated....tens upon tens of millions of them have been produced...and I would bet that most of the coins out of mint rolls will grade MS-69.

As far as a 2010 1/10 oz., you'll pay a higher premium for this year then almost all of the previous dates because collectors/dealers don't know what the total mintage will be...and be buying and holding (or charging a higher premium) hoping for a low number that will have numis. value.

Too, current year coins generally also sell at a higher premium then past years because many folks want to get and give them as presents. Dealers know this so charge more for 'em.

If you just want some 1/10 oz. get earlier dates. They have just as much gold as a 2010.

Check out the finished auctions below. These are from the last few days. MS69 and 70 2006 Ws. Only 25,650 minted. For about the same price as a bullion 1/10 GAEs (about $155 at AP**X + shipping) with potential for much higher profit imo. If you only have money for $5 GAEs, spend the time to search these out at good prices. 07 Ws too.

This will change when they cease minting the Eagles. Not a far-fetched possibility at all, especially for silver.

All other things being equal (they rarely are), might as well go with the lowest mintages.

I have to agree with SLV>GLD and hernancortes to an extent.

Buy gold what ever denomination you want.

But buy them raw.

Most slabbed bullion coins can be more of a hinderance.

Don't just look at GAE's check out Mexican circulated gold, pre '33 American gold, and yes you can get spouses (1/2 ozt. 24k) and other American 90% commemoratives (these in particular can be had for near spot). The others at some good prices. Also Austrian Kroners, Ducats, French 20 Francs, Italian 20 lire, Canadian, Krugerands, Sovereigns, the list goes on and on. These have gold content equal or better than pre '33's.

The only coins that will out perform bullion coins will be the key date pre '33's and some proof GAE's (example 2000 GAE 1ozt. proof coin w/C.O.A. and Original Mint box were between $600-$630. Today those same proofs are at $1800+).

The biggest mistake people are making is putting a $$$$ amount on them (I used it as a reverence).

The dollar is going the way of the Dodo bird. As are most forms of fiat money.

Eventually the market (that's you, me and Joe Six pack) will determine the trade value of all PM's

My advice is to just start and get them raw.

If you can get a slab at spot go for it, you can always cut it out.

BY ALL MEANS, FIND A LOCAL DEALER OR TWO.

PAY CASH AND CARRY.

LEAVE MINIMAL IF NO PAPER TRAIL.

Keep it real friend.

And don't forget the other 3 G's.

Agree about the slabbed coins. "MS-69" means nothing by the loose grading standards employed today in the US. Typical, unimpared coins will grade 69, many will grade even higher at the theoretical "perfect" 70. However, if you can get them in PCGS slabs for no extra cost (through APMEX, say), it's still worth doing.

I like world gold for smaller coins, as the premiums are often reasonable. Ducats, Pesos, Sovereigns, etc.

If you've got a stack of silver trade at the ratio for a Krugger, whether it be tenth, quarter, half, whatever. Raw, so you can touch the Au. There's got to be someone in St.L that'll do that for you. Once you have that first one in your hand, well, you'll know.

Krugerrands, more gold less premimum although Krugs and eagles are selling for within $10 of each other now on apmex.
